Prayer Ministries

“Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and He will say: ‘Here Am I’.” — Isaiah 58:9

Prayer Chain

At St. Paul Lutheran Church, we believe in prayer as a source of healing, comfort, joy and thanksgiving. The St. Paul prayer chain is a group of people who will gladly pray for you, your friends or family, whomever or whatever you request. The prayer chain connects with one another via email or telephone.

If you are in need of prayer, either for yourself or another, please call the church office at 630-832-5580 or email us. You may include a reason for your request, or simply state a name or situation. The prayer chain will honor your request for privacy.

Your prayers are welcome, too. If you are interested in joining this growing network of prayer partners, please contact the church office.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The Women of the ELCA and Wellness Ministry have united in a special ministry: making prayer shawls for the home-bound and those who are ill. We want those who are alone or ill to know that we are thinking of them and praying for them.

We welcome anyone who likes to knit, crochet, or sew fabric to help in this wonderful ministry. We have easy-to-follow patterns and yarn that has been donated. You'll find patterns and yarn in a basket by the north entrance. Or, if you wish, use your own supplies and creative eye to make a shawl.

We pray as we work and when the shawls are finished, they are brought to church to be blessed, and then given away. Each shawl is given with a card that describes how and why it was created.

You are welcome to make a shawl with a recipient in mind. Please let us know who you would like it to be given to. Finished shawls may be taken to the church office, placed in the basket in the north entrance area, or given WELCA coordinators, Linda Lange, or Nell Shallcross.

Prayers and Squares — Prayer Quilt Ministry

What is a Prayer Quilt?
Prayer quilts are the vehicle through which St. Paul congregation members let other members, friends and relatives know that prayers are being offered for the individual needing them.

Each prayer quilt is made specific for the individual and the prayerful hope is that Our Lord brings comfort and peace in a serious and worrisome time. This ministry is sponsored by the St. Paul Wellness Ministries Committee.

A prayer quilt request
St. Paul congregation members are encouraged to remember this ministry as they face or their loved one faces a serious injury, operation, death in the family or similar life changing situation. Requests can be made through the St. Paul Wellness Ministry members, the Pastor, the church office or Ruth Hallman.

After the quilt becomes available for the congregation members for prayers, the person requesting the quilt is encouraged to deliver it to the individual or family who is to receive it.

How is a quilt made?
Three or more quilters get together, twice a month, to make the quilts. The quilts are made up to the point of knotting the yarn at the corners of the individual squares. One or preferably two quilts are always available for any request that has been made.

When a request is made, the quilt is brought to the church nave and placed in an easily accessible place for the congregation members. The prayer quilt prayers become part of the worship service as people are encouraged to tie the knots and pray for the person.

St. Paul member Ruth Hallman is the lead quilter for this ministry. Quilters meet at her home to choose and cut fabric and then sew the parts together. Ruth willingly teaches potential quilters how to make them. All of the quilt elements are available at Ruth's home. The helper quilter only needs to bring her/his own scissors and an interest in learning how to make the quilts.
