Dinner and bike each Saturday — You are invited to bike to Church Saturday night for 5:00 worship, enjoy a light supper at 6:00 and than join others for 90 minutes of biking. Choose one of three routes, and enjoy the company of friends while exercising. The biking program began on Saturday, May 31 and continues every Saturday through the summer. Leave the car at home — Save gas and chat with the family. Our next walk/bike/carpool to church Sunday is July 13. ELCA College Scholarship Fund Established — Recently, a scholarship fund for St. Paul members attending ELCA Colleges was established by the Board of Commissioners. For many years, our congregation has had between 3 and 5 students attending ELCA colleges every year. We would like to increase that number, and hope that a St. Paul scholarship will act as an incentive for our youth to consider an ELCA college. Please consider a one time or an on going contribution to this scholarship fund. Memorial donations or endowment funds are also welcomed. Questions can be directed to Pastor Swanson, Mark and Phyllis Johnson, Marti Seaton or Gay Nass . Growing Green Quiz: If you have a leaky toilet in your home you can save huge amounts of water (and money) by getting it fixed. Check for leaks by adding food coloring to the tank. If you have a leak, color will appear in the bowl within 15 minutes. Flush as soon as you’re done with this test to avoid staining the bowl. A leaky toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water a day! It is estimated that 2 out of every 10 toilets in the U.S. leak. The Power of Prayer — Did you know that St. Paul has very active e-mail and phone prayer chains? Perhaps you would like to join this important ministry. The only commitment is to pass along prayer requests to the next person if you are on the phone prayer chain, or in the case of the e-mail chain, read the request. Then pray. If you have a prayer request that you would like included in our prayers, contact the church office or Pastor Swanson. To become a member of the prayer chain, contact Gay Nass at 630-495-3742 or nassgr@sbcglobal.net and indicate which chain you would like to join. All are welcome at WELCA Book Group — On Monday, July 7 at 7 p.m. St. Paul WELCA Book Club will meet to discuss the novel Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult. In the book, a high profile city attorney takes on the case of an unmarried, Amish teen accused of smothering her infant. Both a drama and a mystery, this book provides the reader with a glimpse of the daily life of the Amish people. We will meet at the home of Marilyn Payton, 1014 S. Leslie Lane, Villa Park. Of Interest The following message about our Tanzania travelers is relayed from Gay Nass (husband, Dave, and daughter, Laura, are in Tanzania ). Monday the St. Paul group left their lodge at the rim of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and traveled by Land Rover down a steep, slippery, clay, switchback road into the Ngorongoro crater. Dave said it was treacherous, but thankfully a short ride. Once they were in the crater they followed paths, along with other Land Rovers, to see the thousands of animals that were everywhere. They saw wildebeests, giraffes, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, lions, pink flamingos, baboons and more. They ended the day by driving up the other side of the crater to their lodge, Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, for the night. In the crater there are few trees and it was about 60 degrees. At the rim it is a lush rain forest and very cool. Cold enough to see your breath. From the lodge you can look straight down, off a cliff, about 600 meters, into the crater. The lodge has electricity and hot water, but only during limited hours. Dave and Laura felt rested and clean after their night at the Octagon Lodge. Tuesday they will tour the Serengeti www.serengeti.org for more game viewing. They have been told it will be warmer in that area. They are staying at the Lobo Wildlife Lodge on Tuesday. Wednesday they will continue on their safari in the area of Lobo and stay at the Seronera Wildlife Lodge. Thursday they will begin their trip back to Arusha, stopping at the Maasai Girl’s Lutheran School http://www.isa.nl/TanzaniaProject/mglss.html near Monduli , Tanzania . I know there are people from Concordia Language Villages ( Moorhead , Minnesota ) teaching English there now as part of the Global Language Villages program. I hope the St. Paul group is able to meet them. Tanzania Itinerary Our journey began on June 15, and Wednesday June 25 we game view around the Lobo Wildlife Lodge and after lunch game view enroute to the Seronera Wildlife Lodge where we will be on Wednesday evening. http://www.hotelsandlodges-tanzania.com/tanzania-hotel-and-lodges-seronera-wildlife-lodge.htm Thursday June 26 we travel through the short grass plains of the Serengeti, over the crater highlands and back to Arusha, stopping in the late afternoon at the Monduli Maasai girls school. Thursday night’s lodging was originally to be at the New Safari Lodge in Arusha, but we’ve been bumped to a nearby bed and breakfast. If an emergency arises and you need to contact us do so through Dorobo Safaris. Friday we depart Arusha with photos, memories, stories and work completed on our return journey to the states. |
